When you live in a place like British Columbia’s West Kootenay, you learn to love the mountains.
Our tiny village of Kaslo is surrounded by them (and fronted by spectacular Kootenay Lake). For many of us, there’s nothing better than gathering some friends & family together and trekking up to a cabin or lodge for a night or two in the high country.
Mt. Carlyle Backcountry Lodge is a great example. The trailhead is a little over an hour from our door. From there, it’s a steep-ish four-hours on an excellent trail to Carpenter Pass, and from there less than half a kilometre to the lodge.
It’s rustic but cozy, offering up amazing views, fantastic scrambles among the adjacent peaks, and a complete absence of the distractions that make urban life hectic and stressful. Between the sauna, the wine, good company and a fat ol’ moon, a good time was had by all!
